Title: Just One Week
Author: Alice Gaines
Publication date: September 12th 2016
Category/Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Entangled
“Alice Gaines will tantalize your romance taste buds with a book you can’t put down until the very last page.” NYT bestselling author Jasmine Haynes.

Her brother’s best friend is not only the hottest man Michelle Dennis has ever seen, he’s the one man she hopes to avoid after leaving town eight years ago. Of course he’s the one waiting at the airport. Worse, he made sure they’re staying in the same house.

Pro football player Alex Stafford is expecting to pick up his friend’s kid sister, not a full-fledged bombshell. He was planning to apologize for their past, but the feelings he had years ago come roaring back…and this time, there’s no denying them. Keeping his hands off is a test he’s bound to fail—especially when they’re stuck in close quarters. But falling in love with Michelle, living in her world, isn’t an option for a guy like him. And remembering that will save them both a lot of heartache…

Thank you, Entangled!

Brother’s best friend is such a great trope, and “Just One Week” knew how to use this trope to its advantage, making this book a great, funny, quick and sexy read.

Here we have a super smart MC falling in love with a super popular athlete. Michelle and Alex have known each other practically their entire lives. Michelle has always been the smartest girl he knew, and Alex has always been her hero. As they grew up, Michelle started developing feelings for her brother’s best friend, but he always acted like her protector. After an incident, Michelle confessed her feelings for Alex, but he pushed her away. So she ended up going to college and not going back home for 8 years.

That had to change when Alex’s parents, the amazing couple who treated Michelle and her brother as part of the family decided to throw a huge party to celebrate their anniversary. Michelle couldn’t refuse the invitation, even though she wanted to stay away from her first and true love.

Alex thought he was ready to see Michelle again after all those years, but she’s no longer the teenage girl with a crush on him. She’s now a gorgeous and highly successful woman, and he thinks she’s way too much for him. As a football player, Alex is also successful, but he doesn’t think much of himself because of his dyslexia and the way some people made him feel like he was just some dumb athlete.  Imagine what falling in love with someone who’s working on a research that can have a real impact in people’s lives will do to this man’s confidence.

The two main things keeping these characters apart are: Michelle’s insecurity about Alex’s feelings (due to what happened eight years before) and Alex’s insecurity about his place in Michelle’s life (due to the dyslexia and her career). I thought the author explored those things well enough to keep the story moving in an interesting pace.

When Alex and Michelle decided to act on their feelings, we were rewarded with some great sexy scenes and also adorable moments between these two people who have always been there for each other.

Aside from the romance, what really got me this time was the relationship between Michelle and Alex’s family. I absolutely loved Alex’s parents. They were good people with a happy family and a great marriage. I wanted to be their children, too (and I have amazing parents so that’s saying something). I loved how they treated Michelle and her brother as if they were their own children. It was refreshing to see a well-functioning family that stayed together and loved each other.

Overall, this was a quick and fun read that is perfect for the brother’s-best-friend-trope fans out there.
