Oh, well, who doesn’t
love a good story involving Greek mythology? I certainly do, and when it
promises me adventure and romance, then you can count on me to read it and
probably enjoy it.
We meet Skylar when she’s
driving to her aunt’s place to spend a few weeks with her cousin and best
friend, Kayla. The girls always get together during summer and Skylar is so
eager to see her cousin again that she can’t stop texting while driving. That’s
when she’s pulled over by a cop, who happens to be super cute (and about her
age, so don’t go getting any ideas). Even after he lets her go, Skylar is still
thinking about him.
To her surprise, Skylar
and the cute cop meet again at her aunt’s diner, but he pretends not to know
her and denies being the cop who pulled her over. Of course Skylar is immediately intrigued by
the mysterious cop-not-a-cop, and when Kayla starts flirting with his brother,
Skylar sees the opportunity to get to know her crush better.
Well… it so happens that
Mason (the cop-not-a-cop’s name) is the son of Zeus with a human, and he has some
serious superpowers. And so do his brothers. So, yeah, you don’t get one son of
Zeus, but at least three more – two, if you consider that one of them doesn’t
stick around long enough.
Of course the moment
Skylar and her cousin get closer to the boys, their lives start to turn upside
down. But while we do get to see a little of Kayla’s POV, most of the story
follows Skylar, so her life gets messier than her cousin’s.
Skylar is a strong young
girl. She doesn’t simply run away screaming when monsters start to knock on her
door. With Mason’s help, she fights them (the best way she can) and insists on
knowing what the heck is going on. I liked that about her.
The story has enough
twists to keep you entertained, including ones that put Skylar in a position of
power. I won’t talk much about it because of SPOILERS, but let’s just say that
Skylar doesn’t turn out to be another damsel in distress. She has enough power
to get herself out of trouble, if she learns how to use it right.
The romance between
Skylar and Mason is another big part of the story, and it was fun to watch them
grow closer and finally embrace what they felt for each other, putting their
fears and insecurities aside.
The story ends in a
cliffhanger that will surely have readers anxious for the next book.
Overall, Mary Ting’s Descendant
Prophecies series brings a group of descendants of the Greek gods
getting in trouble and falling in love, so if you’re into that sort of thing, I
think you’ll enjoy this book.
